U.S. Government Information on Kenya
The U.S. government offers some good information on Kenya in fairly digestible,
although somewhat dry, reports. If you are looking for statistics or general background
info on Kenya, this is the place for you.
Except for reformatting the information to make it easier to read, the following
reports are those issued by the government.
- Travel Warnings & Consular Info Sheets - This links to the U.S. State
Department's travel advisories; just scroll down the list until you reach the Kenya
text. For further information, check the Consular & Travel Advice (warnings) from the British Foreign Office, although they tend to be
more general and refer to major known criminal activities that may affect visitors.
- 1997 CIA Factbook: Kenya - This offers an excellent overview of Kenya, from geography and national statistics to the opposition parties in the government. The 1995 and 1996 versions are also available.
- USAID FY 1996 Congressional Presentation: Kenya - This report discusses
Kenya's foreign aid needs, focusing on its achievements and ongoing challenges.
- Kenya: 1994 Country Report on Economic Policy and Trade
Practices - A look at Kenya's trade, covering everything from its structural and debt management
policies to worker rights and the extent of U.S. investment.
- 1996 National Trade Estimate: Kenya - Report by the
office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Examines trade related areas like import
policies, intellectual property protection, and service and investment barriers.
- Kenya Human Rights Practices, 1997 -
A U.S. Department of State report focusing on
six areas, including (1) Respect for the Integrity of the Person, (2) Respect for
Civil Liberties, (3) Respect for Political Rights, (4) Government Attitude Regarding
International and Nongovernmental Investigation of Alleged Violations of Human Rights,
(5) Discrimination, and (6) Worker Rights.
The 1995 and 1996 reports are also available.
- Kenya Country Health Profile - This profile contains
descriptive information and tables on the country's health and demographic
characteristics, health indicators and trends, and when available, the health care
system. Profile information is compiled from CIHI's databases and reference library,
as well as through research and analysis of other data sources and reports.
