Hi Lara and Tim, Many times I visited your wonderful site in order to get information about Kenya for the schoolproject we did in early 1999. About hundred or more primary schools in The Netherlands worked with these projects. The info about people, language, culture and animals was very helpful. Special item in our project was the Special Education for children in the slumms of Nairobi. Our children enjoyed this project very much. Thanks. Jan Bakker.

It was great reading your site. Having just returned from a trip to Kenya it was interesting to read about people and places we have seen! Thank you

do these clowns censor this site and apparently only allow positive comments. what a bunch of morons posing as "tour guides" bet this will be gone in a day..so read while you can. I find your views of kenya and africa very colonial and imperialistic having lived in foreign countries, I see how these posers perpetuate stereotypes. Put something +ve on urban life, and people.Kenya is a land of people and not just animals!

Comment by Tim (inserted on January 3, 2000, after trying to ignore a previous post by this individual):

I assume that you are the "al" that signed the guestbook the other day, and whose comment I removed. That is the first guestbook signing I have ever removed and let me explain why.

I grew up in Kenya. I lived there for fourteen years. Anyone who actually bothered to read the site would understand that. I love Kenya a great deal, but what I love about Kenya is what makes it different. The land, the people, the cultural diversity, and many other facets of Kenyan life are what most people love about Kenya. Urban life doesn't make Kenya special.

I don't mind valid criticism of the site. In the three and a half years this site has existed, I have received several emails (out of many hundreds) which brought up valid points or mistakes. Even the ones that I disagreed with were courteous and well reasoned. Your messages (particularly your first one), are childish and insulting. I'll leave this one up for you so that people can witness your stunning intellect. Even this time you do not use a valid email address, which inclines me to believe that you are simply a cowardly troublemaker, hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. How pages about Kenyan culture, places, etc., are "colonial and imperialistic" I really don't understand, nor do I care about your opinion. The only page that I have on "animals" is one on fish, and I do have pages on the people of Kenya.

If you would read the guestbook (and the many emails I get), you would find that most Kenyans feel this is a good site, and have no complaints whatsoever. I have many Kenyan friends who think it is a great site. But I guess you will call them "posers" and claim that they don't know anything about Kenya.

It's a great pity that you don't appreciate what makes Kenya special and instead spend your time attacking those who love Kenya for its beauty. It is you who perpetuate the stereotypes and it is you who should learn to appreciate Kenya for what it is.

By the way, freedom of expression and censorship apply only to the government, not private individuals. Perhaps you should spend some time reading books on subjects about which you obviously know nothing. This is a private site, and I will edit it as I see fit. If you would like to continue this conversation, you may email me at kenya@blissites.com. I doubt you will do that though, since then you would have to reveal your email address. This page, however, is not a public forum and does not exist for you to vent your opinion against the world. Any further postings by you that follow this line of logic (or total lack thereof) will be removed.

Tim

I am preparing for our upcoming cultural fair day at Scenic Elementary School. One of our featured countries will be Kenya. I found several items I needed on your website alone, i.e., recipes the children can prepare and instruments they can make. Now I need a simple game they can make and/or play. Do you have any ideas? Thanks.

We have a young man that attends our church from Kenya. He is here on a cross country scollership and won't get to go home for 4 years. I wanted to do something to remind him of home and to make him feel love by our family and people that have taken him in their homes. So, I started looking for a recipe to make Ugali and I found it on your site with lots of other great things. Thank you for the time you have taken to inrich other peoples lives. May God bless and keep you both.

Quik Habari, As a third generation Kenyan, I just had to drop a line..... Interesting, but not surprising, that ex-Kenyans just don't let go! I'm still trying to get back there. Our family lived in various parts of Kenya.. From Nairobi to Nakuru to Eldoret, to Kitale, Kisumu etc... and of course our schooling was just as varied. My brother & I finished our schooling at the Duke of York, (as it was called then). I haven't even had time to properly view your great site, but it is always so uplifting to hear about Kenya. Wow! What a site! I didn't come across a single negative comment about my motherland Kenya! This makes me a real proud Kenyan. I may have had the good fortune of travelling and visiting many different countries on the face of this planet...but there is only one Kenya....and the Coast with its swaying coconut palm trees on sugar-white sandy beaches rules. I spent a total of 13 years as a primary school teacher in Mombasa. I was trained at the Govt. Asian Central Teachers Training College in Nagara (Behind the City Primary School/Duke of Gloucester High/Jamhuri High) in 1963/1964. Before reluctantly quittting teaching, I was the Headmaster of St Augustines Preparatory School in Tudor 4 area in Mombasa. I miss my days as a teacher. I pine for Mombasa, a place where I was born, grew up, studied, married, had kids, taught, worked, played, fished, hitch-hiked, made friends, .... I could just go on and on. I may be a Canadian citizen today (circumstantial) but my heart belongs to Kenya. I would have loved to visit Kenya as often as I could. I was last there in 1992. It has now becomr too expensive not only to travel there but the cost of living in Kenya is astronomical. May be I will continue to strive to explore avenues through which I can return to the Coast and retire. My ultimate desire is to be buried in that beautiful country....preferably in a sleepy little coastal village like Takaungu....which happens to have some of the most pleasant memeories as a result of my active membership in Kenya Voluntary Development Association and their affiliation to other international organizations such as The Cross Roads, The Peace Corps, Experiment in International Living and the like. I attended and also had the good fortune of leading a few voluntary work camps in some of the very remote places in Kenya. It was in such haraambe camps that I met and made lifelong friendships with some great human beings from other lands. Today, I am a proud God-father to a dashing young Swiss lad.... Felix. I met Felix's mum, amongst others, in the KVDA organised camp in Takaungu in early sixties! We have remained friends ever since....now for 35 years! Keep up the great site and good luck to you. Long Live Kenya and May Allah guide its rulers that they may rule justly, for the benefit of the wanaanchi and preserve the beauty that God has so kindly bestowed upon Kenya! The politicians will be here today and gone tomorrow but Kenya must be preserved for all of its present as well as its subsequent generations.... at all costs. There can be no compromise on this point. Salamu nyingi sana and Kwaheri from Ramu.

great site. i am touched to read the comments of people who love kenya, even though some may never have been there. it is gratifying to read such positive comments despite all the troubles our beloved country is currently experiencing. asante.

I am a writer working on my first novel, and am doing research on Kenya. I would like to correspond with someone who would be willing to answer questions. Is that possible?
