NyeriNyeri lies at the base of the Aberdare Mountains and is the capital of Kikuyuland. There is a surprising amount going on in the way of trade as Nyeri is a market town, surrounded by shambas which grow beautiful vegetables. Business brings in much of the town's money and it is also a transportation center for this part of the country. Nyeri is also the burial place of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, a hero of the Boer War and the founder of the Boy Scout movement. He once wrote "The nearer to Nyeri the nearer to bliss" and would no doubt be satisfied with his final resting place in the town cemetery with his wife. The well known Outspan Hotel is located in Nyeri and serves as a starting point for the short trip to Treetops. The Ark, like Treetops, also provides an enjoyable game watching experience. It is based at the Aberdare Country Club towards Nyahururu. Treetops is on the edge of Aberdare National Park and The Ark is further west and deeper in the Park. Aberdare National Park is a beautiful area with forests, wildlife, and waterfalls. The wildlife can be hard to see due to the thickness of the forests, but it is there. This area is as green as any in Kenya, and it is worth spending time exploring. Elephants, buffalo, bongo, lion, leopard, and colobus monkeys are there if you look hard enough. | |||||||||||
