Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria, also called Nyanza, is the largest body of water in Africa and the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It covers 26,828 square miles in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Kisumu is Lake Victoria's major Kenyan city, although no longer nearly as busy as it once was. It serves as a good starting point for an exploration of the area.

Fisherman on Lake Victoria

Homa Bay doesn't have much to offer, but Rusinga Island is worth a visit as it has Tom Mboya's mausoleum. Mboya was a Kenyan civil rights champion and politician who was killed in Nairobi in 1969. Moving on to Mfangano Island, there isn't much to see except for some rock paintings which are apparently old and that is about all anyone knows about them. Kendu Bay offers little except for Simbi Lake, which is a short walk from the shore. Simbi is a sunken, seemingly bottomless lake with bright green water and no observable source. Nobody goes out on it, even in boats, and there are plenty of legends concerning the odd bit of water.
